Exact image size output in Vuescan - How??
Posted by Ned Kelly on January 2nd, 2004

I need to scan all my (3,000-odd) 35mm transparencies for projection.
I want to display them on a projector at 1024x768.
The projector takes a memory stick and so file size is also a consideration.
(In order to get as many as possible onto the stick)
I never want to print them, so DPI is unimportant.

Given that any image greater than 1024x768 will be wasted when projected, I
am prepared to crop each image to exactly that - 1024x768

But how?

I can't seem to be able to specify "most" of the image as a crop, with the
output file being exactly 1024x768.

Any hints please?

Cheers

Tony

You want to keep your original aspect ratio intact I assume. This means that unless your projector can scale the file on the fly you'll be using 768 as your largest width since any vertical pictures will be that height thus restricting your width. Scan quality you can pick from the list:

Option Dimensions Type Pixels
======= =========== ==== ======
Email 600 x 400 JPEG .24M
Web 800 x 600 JPEG .48M
Print 1600 x 1200 JPEG 1.9M
Edit 2048 x 1536 TIFF 3.1M
Archive 3000 x 2000 TIFF 6.0M

If you want to compute actual DPI which equates also to pixels in this case.
Your original 35mm is actually 36X24mm (~1.4 by .9 inches) Divide the
number of pixels you have to work on your output device -- either 1024 or
768 -- by the orginal. e.g. 1024 / 36 = 28.44 Dot Per mm. or convert to
inches you get 28.44 * 25.4 = 722.5 pixels per inch, so set your scanner to
"Custom" DPI at 722. You'll get an image 1023 X 682. But like I said unless
your output device can scale down any vertical orientations in your "oeuvre"
(collection) you may be better off making a small image using 768 as your
limiting number.
Crop | Lock Aspect Ration to manual and set it to 1.5, then set X to 24 and
Y to 36. Hold down the shift Key after your marquee appears and move it over
the frame. Then Scan.

768 would equate to 542 DPI when scanning.
