Explanation of PaperPort error message
Posted by History Fan on August 12th, 2006

I own a new Dell desktop PC, running XP Home SP2, 1GB of system RAM,
256MB of video RAM. Just a few days ago, I won an auction on eBay for the
Visioneer 5800USB flatbed scanner. It uses PaperPort 7.02 Deluxe software.

I have noticed a weird, but annoying glitch with the PaperPort
software that causes it to repeatedly crash. Here is how I replicate it:

1) I open the PaperPort software and open an image I've already
scanned
2) I repeated click the 'Zoom In' button until the image gets so
large that you need to use the scroll bars to see everything.

At that point, PaperPort crashes. Here is some of the info reported
by Dr. Watson regarding these crashes:

Application exception occurred:
App: C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\PaperPort\Paprport.exe (pid=3316)
When: 8/9/2006 @ 18:39:22.171
Exception number: c0000005 (access violation)

Application exception occurred:
App: C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\PaperPort\Paprport.exe (pid=3268)
When: 8/9/2006 @ 18:57:44.953
Exception number: 80000003 (hardcoded breakpoint)

Is there anything that can be done about this? A relative of
mine uses the same scanner, and I cannot reproduce the crash on her
computer.

On a related note, are there any free, good scanner programs I could
try instead of PaperPort?

A few points to look out for.

That version of PaperPort is four behind current (PP11). It came out
before XP, and certainly SP2, which broke some software that
previously worked in XP.

You should also check to see if there are any updates for PP7. They
have put out various service packs.

As to your problem, you don't tell us enough to be able to tell what
is going on. For example, what is the format of the scanned image? And
do remember that PaperPort is not designed to be image editing
software so much as scanning and filing software.
