film scanner heating up negatives - bad?
Posted by t c on August 1st, 2004

My negatives seem to go into the film scanner (batch scan a strip of
6) relatively flat and come out somewhat warm, with a tad bit of a
....curl... that doesn't seem to have been there at all. I think it
may be due to film scanner heat. the back of the minolta scan dual IV
seems to get a tad warm and I think it might be the power supply. Is
this normal? Or is my scanner about to melt?

thanx,
Tyler

I was concerned that the Minolta Scandual 4 was gets too hot also.

I put a thermometer inside, the maximum temp on the printed circuit board
was 119 degrees Fahrenheit after 2 hours of operation.

Scanner worked fine at that temp.

As long as the power brick is powered and plugged into the rear of the
scanner, the heat is present all the time.

OK. My main concern is - what sort of harm/damage/risk does this pose
to the negatives - will it fade anything or damage the film itself, or
cause more scratching or artifacts?

thanks,
Tyler

I would not think that any harm will come to your slides or negatives in the
short time they are inside the scanner. The film/slides do not touch
anything except the film/slide holder that you insert the film/Slides into.
The film/slides get more bad treatment from you handling the film/slides
that the scanner transport. Especially if you do not use cotton gloves when
handling the film/slides.

The circuit board ( where the heat is generated) is in the bottom of the
scanner case and the film holders run in the top of the case. There is at
least 2 inches between the circuit board and the film/slide holder.

If you have a real concern that the scanner is defective, then contact
Minolta Digital Support In the USA at (877) 462.4464.
