- Looking for a Portable Scanner

Is there a self-contained portable scanner available that will connect to a
power source and allow you to scan and store images, similar to a digital
camera, so that you can connect to a computer later and transfer and view them?
I want to be able to take a scanner and scan some family albums and books but
there is no computer available at the site and I can't borrow the albums or
books.

There is no stand-alone scanner. You need a computer (laptop) to control the
scanner and to save the files to a hard drive.
You would have to bring a computer and scanner with you. The Cannon LiDE
series of scanners is powered from the USB buss and require no external
power.
A CanoScan LiDE 20 can be bought for around $50.

I bet you can find a used laptop computer cheap that would drive the
scanner.
Check Ebay. I saw a Compaq 7400 for $177.51.

CSM1's advice is best, but there is another way.... use a digital
camera and photograph the books, It takes good lighting, and a steady
hand (or use a copy stand), but the results can be quite good if
you're careful and practice beforehand.

The Epson RX500 is a bit bulky, but it will work nicely. You can
scan directly to Compact Flash, SD, Memory Stick, Smart Media, etc.

What kind of quality do you want? Is it just to view on a
computer monitor with no printing?
