Will the LS-4000 cable up to most IEEE 1394 firewire PCI cards using XP
as an operating system. Why wasn't this scanner USB compatable?
thanks

No idea.
Maybe it predates USB, or USB 2.0? The LS-5000 does use USB.

According to Nikon's website, the LS-4000 supports USB 1.1.
Not Firewire, and not USB 2.x.

That is very bizarre. It seems to be confused between the LS-4000 and
the LS-40.
The same thing happened when I started from this link:

I briefly had an LS-4000 and needed a firewire card for it. I got an
el-cheapo, which would have worked had the scanner not been damaged.
Got a refund BTW, having brought it on Ebay. The seller had failed to
pack it correctly.

The LS-40, or Coolscan IV, is a USB unit. The Coolscan 4000 is
firewire, which has a higher data transfer rate. My Coolscan 4000 is
plugged into my motherboard's firewire port (not using the Nikon card);
it works fine.
