Does anyone have any idea how to stop this scanner from starting,
lighting up, and staying lit, every time I reboot my Win XP machine?
(Aside from turning off the service.) I'm afraid this is going to burn
out the light very, very prematurely, especially since some who use this
one can't remember to turn it off every time.

Do most scanners these days share this most aggravating abnormality?
