Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED (the sound of...)
Posted by Paul on July 20th, 2004

Hi Folks,
I used the Coolscan V ED for about 10 months and then decided to
upgrade to the 5000 ED. From experience with the V ED I expected the
usual buzzing noise but the 5000 ED is much louder with heavy
vibration (during calibration only, no affect on scans) and a bit
sickly sounding, like it's about to stall. Scans are great but I'm
worried this is a motor problem waiting to happen.
Please let me know if your 5000 ED sounds as described.
Thanks,
Paul.

There have been a lot of reports about excessive noise and vibration
from recent generations of Nikon scanners, but the only reported problem
which *might* be attributable to the same cause seems to be the banding
effect on the high speed scan option of the LS-8000. When I first got
my LS-4000 I could barely believe the noise level and, had it not been
for reading other reports about it, would have been just as concerned as
you. Now, I don't notice it, it is just what I expect - and it is a lot
noisier in calibration.

Hello

It might me my imagination, but my new LS50 is much noisier when

I just purchased the 5000 with the same experience. Loud calibration,
buzzing during scans with great results. I too would be worried if I
had not heard similar experiences. The Nikon software seems good, any
recommendation for Viewscan
