Is this the first time you have printed scanned images with this
combination ? If not, what has changed since the last good print ? Most
prints will look flat or dull compared to the screen unless glossy photo
paper is used, and even then they will never look exactly the same.

no, but they have all had this problem, fairly new combo
premium high gloss photo paper is being used
I have been a pretty solid amateur photographer for over 40 years, finally
bought a decent film scanner to archive and print (cheaper) some of my
85,000+ slides (scanner should be cheaper and easier than darkroom, not to
mention Kodak is discontinuing the color chemistry/paper I have used for
years and like)

hmmm, the printer drivers are much better and haven't had that problem
that I'm aware of. will check out the url
good idea
aye that is correct but downloaded ones are better.
how can you check/adjust your monitor??
6500?????
?? I have been able to mess with colormanagment in Gimp, but I thought I
had selected RGB in Veuscan but will double check
the unsharp mask?? I had that on and turned it off
thats' what I'm trying to do, I have one particular print that I am using
to learn on, it is an exceptionally challenging print, low light angle,
lots of shadows, subtle neutral colors with some few bright spots, etc

Which file color space did you choose in vuescan for storing the scanned
images? Usually in a non-color-managed environment the printer drivers expect
to be fed with sRGB.

I bought a colorimeter made by sequel-imaging. The Software is for
windows.
Before I bought this instrument I tried the tools from
http://www.littlecms.com/
Sequel-imaging is offering a toolkit for linux, so combining this with
lcms code you can write your own monitor profiling tool ;-))
I am bad in writing c-code, so I have to stay with windows.
environment.
I know of cause that the printing industry standard is 5000K,
but at my multi-purpose pc I use 6500K.
