I'm using the software fresh from the box so to speak. Just confirm the
results I deleted the .INI and .DSE files as the were both created when the
program first ran. The Scanner is a Scan Elite (f-2900) with SCSI
interface. This event occurs after the first time the software runs, it
(the software) wants to calibrate the scanner. After this event it doesn't
try for another calibration unless it is forced. Normally I would be using
transparency film, but the result is the same if there is no film in the
holder at all. An off-white scan is returned, if the color balance is set
to none, it returns a nice golden brown suntan. All settings are default,
so the software is using internal values for profiling.

I may be able to provide you with an ICC file. I'm assuming that you want
it run with 7.6.57. I did try profiling with 7.6.49, but the results were
rather weird. I just stuck with the generic setup, unfortunately I can't do
that anymore.
What would cause the calibration results to change so much from version to
version?

Well I thought I could do an ICC profile, but the results are really dark.
The whitest box scans as 101:101:105. I'm still getting really off-white
frames if the colour balance is set to white-balance and brown if set to
none, when I scan an empty mount. At this point 7.6.49 is doing it also.
If I use the Minolta software everything looks fine. I don't know may be
the scanner is going sour.
I'm completely baffled now.

I went through the source code changes between 7.6.49 and 7.6.50.
There are three possibilities:
1) Do you have a Scan Elite or a Scan Elite II? There was one exposure
related change for the Scan Elite II between these two versions
2) Are you scanning very dense negatives? There was one change related
to dense negatives that may be somehow related to the problem.
3) Are you using a scanner profile that you created? If so, try
re-creating it in the latest version.

I'm actually using a profile from a Scan Speed internally in VueScan
for the Scan Elite (F-2900). I don't recall if I ever had a chance
to scan a Q60 when I was working on the Scan Elite a long time ago.
I don't have access to one any more.
It would be useful if someone could e-mail me an ICC file produced
by VueScan with this scanner. I'll then add this to VueScan.
In the mean time, you'll need to profile your Scan Elite with an
IT8 calibration target - this should fix the problem you're seeing.

Try first deleting vuescan.ini, then only do the steps in the User's
Guide. Don't throw in extra steps, like changing "Input|Media type".
