Recommendations For A (Bulk) Film/Slide Scanner, Please
Posted by Peter D on July 22nd, 2005

I have 2,000-3,000 slides to scan. Most are "Kodachrome", some are
"Peruchrome". All were developed in Germany in early 80s (if that makes any
difference). Very little exposure to light since then and they appear to be
in premium condition. They are mounted in thin glass holders, thin and thick
plastic holders, and cardboard holders (almost evenly distributed across all
types). I also have about 1,000 full strips of negatives and a hundred or so
smaller strips.

Money is (almost) no object and I may go on to scan for others to defray my
costs, so I thought I'd invest in a premium film/slide scanner and be done
with it. Is there anything that I can load the slides and film into that
will process them quickly and automatically? Anything that can do 4 or 6 at
a time (my flatbed can)? I can't imagine how long it will take to do that
many slides one at a time. Will I have to remove them from the mounts (the
glass ones for sure, I think)?

film scanner.

The best bet for bulk scanning is a Nikon film scanner with automatic slide
feeder. The slide feeder holds 50 slides and can do unattended scanning.

The Coolscan 5000 ED is the top of line 35 mm scanner and the SF210 Auto
Slide Feeder works with this model, The ASF does not work with the Coolscan
V ED.

The SF210 Auto Slide Feeder: Can not be found on the NikonUSA web site.

Go for one of the Nikons that can take both a bulk slide feeder adapter and
an uncut film roll adapter. I don't know if the Nikon 9000 has these
adapters, but if it did, the 9000's Pro version of ICE that is supposed to
work on Kodachrome might make the extra investment worth it.
