Scanner with built in Film scanner for 6cm negatives ??
Posted by pcbh fan on November 25th, 2003

I have a number of old b & w 6cm square negatives. What scanners offer
the ability to scan in this size as most if not all only appear to
accept the standard 35mm ones ? TIA

PS. Does the Plustek UT16 allow for 6cm negatives ?

Don't know about the Plustek, but, the Epson 3170
has exactly what you need, an adapter for medium
format films. Also "image healing" capabilities, for
scratches, dust and discoloration from aging.

The Epson 2450, 3200 (to be replaced by the 4870 next year) and 3170 are
some of the more popular and reasonably priced flatbed scanners that do well
with 6cm 120/220 negatives. The Nikon 8000 (to be replaced by the 9000 next
year) and the Minolta Multi Pro (I think that is the model name) are
dedicated film scanners that handled 6cm (at a much higher price).

Thanks for the info though here in the UK at least the Epson scannners
are very expensive around the £200 mark or about $340. I'm also
looking for a scanner with a built in film scanner not an attachment

I've been happy with the Microtek 5900, a 2400 ppi scanner priced new at
about 140 US dollars plus shipping. I got a used one on eBay for about 80
dollars including shipping.

I've been scanning black and white 6x6's with good results, and would be
happy to post a sample scan if you are interested. Results with scanning
35mm sides have ranged from acceptable to disappointing, depending on the
overall density of the slide.

I have not yet scanned a color negative.
