- Scanner Reviews/Advice Wanted Please
- Posted by Shannon Bradford on January 2nd, 2005
I'm looking to replace my very old Microtek X6EL. I want to spend less than
$200 (hopefully). I'm looking for a flatbed scanner to scan photos with
(some old, some more recent), do a little OCR, etc. I use Photoshop CS and
know my way around it fairly well. I've had a lot of trouble finding good
reviews/information on scanners. I've been looking closely at the Epson
4180, the Microtek line, and the Cannon line. I've been out of the loop so
long when it comes to scanners, I don't know which company is making good
drivers/optics these days.
I've been reading these newsgroups for about a week educating myself on the
various aspects.
If anyone can recommend some good review sites and/or give me some advice on
what models to consider (and why) I'd really appreciate it.
Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Among flatbed scanner, has a quite good price/performance ratio, and
it's very flexible, with its ability to scan transparencies up to
75x270mm.
Still, if you don't plan scanning 120 or panorama film at all, I'd
suggest the Epson 2480: half the price of the 4180 (well under $100)
and plenty of resolution for prints scanning. Also suitable for the
occasional 35mm film scan (not enough real resolving power/dynamic
range/color accuracy to do a good job here, but OK for occasional
use).

I think that for $200 you can buy a very good scanner. One that can scan
Medium Format films also.
Some review sites for scanners.

Thank you both, Fernando and CSM1. I decided to bite the bullet and went and
bought the Epson 4180. It was too good at deal at Staples for $149.98
(they're offering $50 off any of their scanners over $130 this week). I
appreciate your help/advice in this matter.
