- Scanning multi-page documents - hardware and software requirements
- Posted by Dude on November 25th, 2004
I would like to scan 10-20 page documents, saving them as TIF or PDF.
I have Adobe Acrobat 6.0 professional. Should this be good enough, or
do I need something better?
I have tried this with 2 different multi-function all-in-ones, and
neither one seemed able to do it. I first tried with the Epson CX5200.
Now I have an HP4110.
The 4110 has a document feeder, so I assumed it would be able to
handle it. I spoke with tech support, and they said that it was a
memory issue that prevented the HP from scanning more then 3 or 4
pages.
Bottom line - can I get a multi-function / all-in-one with a paper
feeder that can scan a 20 page document? If not, what standalones are
supposed to be good? Will Acrobat be sufficient for making decent size
pdfs, or will I need paperport or something else?

It looks like the limiting factor is the computer you have connected to the
HP 4110.
If you scan a 8.5 X 11 document at 300 dpi, it takes 8.025 Megabytes of
memory if you are scanning 8 bit gray scale. So to scan 20 pages would take
20 X 8.025 MB = 160 megabytes of memory for 8 bit gray scale.
If you scan in color, it takes three times that amount of memory.
