Slide scanner for TV Silde shows
Posted by JSr. on July 12th, 2003

Hi, I'm another old man with many slides from trips made when my wife and I
were young. I mainly want to scan slides and make SVCDs or XVCDs for viewing
on TV. I don't intend to make prints and I would prefer not to spend a
fortune so what should I look for in a scanner? I have gone through past
messages on this but still wonder do I need something as advanced as the
Nikons. I know it will take time but that I have and besides it is an
interesting and mentally stimulating task. The children, grand and great
grandchildren will have the slides if they ever want to do scan for prints.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

is about the best 35 mm scanner for the money.

Steves Digicams Review.

Epson makes several flatbed scanners with 35 mm adapter. They are cheaper.

If all you are going to do with the scanned slides is view them on
Television, then you do not need a high resolution scan. For current TVs 640
X 480 pixels (4:3 ratio) will fill the television screen, future HDTV
(coming in 2006) will be a maximum of 1920 X 1080 pixels (16:9 ratio).

The above statement means that scanning 35 mm film (24 X 36 mm or .945 X
1.378 inches) requires 1080 / .945=1143 ppi for the Vertical (narrow)
dimension on HDTV. So any transparency capable scanner that will scan at
1200 DPI (ppi) will work for your intended use. Be aware that image is not
suitable for printing, only good for television.
