- Using Minolta Dimage Scan Dual IV with USB 1.1
- Posted by Family on March 5th, 2004
I would like to purchase a decent film scanner, and the popular choice
seems to be the Minolta Dimage Scan Dual line.
My computers are iMacs and eMacs and a Gateway Windows machine. All of
them have USB 1.1.
What will happen when I try to use a USB 2.0 appliance like the Dimage
Scan Dual?
Will it work, but slower. Or will it not work at all?

Will work.
Slower? Maybe, depends on whether you scan at high enough rez for the
data transfer to oversaturate the USB 1.1 bus.
Btw, a 2.0 USB card can be had for $20 or less for Win98SE and up and
Macintosh X (if you have a PCI slot).

I've set up a Minolta Dual IV scanner with a slot-loading iMac for
someone, via USB, with no problem. Scanning speed is about average,
quality very good.

At higher resolutions you get some pauses in the scanning which
presumably don't happen with USB 2, if you have enough memory.
