VueScan: discrepancy between preview color and scan color.
Posted by Billman on December 5th, 2003

I have a recurring problem that I'm not sure if I'm solving the
easiest way or solving correctly. I very often notice a (sometimes
dramatic) difference in the color cast of a preview image and the
image that is scanned and it is really frustrating me. The preview
color looks great and the scan color looks like crap.

I can get the same color cast (I think, as far as my eye can tell) if
I go through the "lock exposure->[preview]->lock film color base"
process, but that seems unnecessary when the visual color of the
preview is already correct (because I'm essentially previewing the
negatives twice in order to "lock film color base")

Any suggestions or recommendations? How can I get scans with the same
color cast/balance as the preview?

SNIP
The Preview and (final) Scan are usually made with different resolutions.
Depending on the images, the same Color tab settings may result in different
results for different detail. You may want to try a higher Preview
resolution than Auto selects.
If that doesn't address the issue, there may be other settings causing it.

Thanks for the recommendation, Bart. Your suggestion makes sense, but
I find that if I go through the effort of "lock film color base" by
previewing twice, I can get a scan that has the same color as the
preview. (At least I think that's the case: I'll test again to be
certain about this claim.) If this is true, then that would suggest
that the preview resolution isn't the issue, wouldn't it?

After locking the exposure, you must do another Preview. This time the
preview is done with the same (locked) exposure time as the final scan. It
will also reveal the possibility to lock the film base color. Locking that
will not change the colors, and another Preview will be done with those
locked settings, so nothing should change.

If there still is a difference, there is either a bug, or the resolution
will make a difference. I regularly see a difference when I engage the IR
cleaning. That will remove artifacts (if the scanner provides an IR channel
exposure), and the color calculations can change if the image color is
unlocked.
