- What scanner is like my old Epson 1250?
- Posted by Johno on July 20th, 2007
WHAT I'M SEEKING
I'm in the UK. I want to buy a very basic scanner for a friend here
so he can make photcopies of documents/diagrams, send scans by email,
etc.
The source documents will be mainly mono rather than colour. His
printer is a mono desktop laser.
WHAT I HAVE GOT
I already use an old Epson scanner. It's not that great but it's
good enough. What would I have to spend today to get something of a
similar (or better) quality?
My scanner is an Epson Perfection 1250 (very similar to the 1650).
This was launched in mid-2001 with a price tag of 130 US dollars.
An Epson marketing brochure for the scanner and also another document
with more detailed specs are here:

WHAT I HAVE SEEN
HP's cheapest is the Scanjet 2400 at £40

Canon's entry scanner is CanoScan LiDE 25 Scanner at £45
Canon Canoscan Lide 70 USB scanner at £50

How about an Epson Perfection 1250 for $10 USD? I bought my Epson
Perfection 1250 several months ago in a second-hand store for that.
Works just fine for the stuff I need to get up onto web pages.
Seriously. In most second-hand stores I trawl through, I see _mounds_
of decent looking scanners. My educated guess is that I am seeing the
We-don't-need-it-It's-just-in-the-way discards from the purchase of a PC
package, or I am seeing the discards of folks that absolutely have to
have the latest-and-greatest techno-clap-trap for their system.

I chopped it in against one of Canon's MP500 all-in-one printers.
