- accessing another computer on my home network
- Posted by Vonne on January 21st, 2006
Hello,
I am trying to import my mail from my laptop to my desktop (laptop needs to
go in for service) and when I import I can't access my laptop because it is
asking me for a username and password. How can I get that? Thanks

Well - assuming you are just trying to connect to the laptop's hard disk
drive over the network and import the email (never said what application -
so going with the assumption of Outlook Express here) - it is the
username/password you use to log into the laptop with.

Thanks. Yes, it is Outlook Express. I don't have a password attached to my
User Account on my laptop so I created a password and tried that. But it
still doesn't work. Any other ideas?

For the username, put in "LAPTOP_NETBIOS_NAME\username" instead of just the
username.
Is Simple File Sharing off on both machines?
(Are they both XP.. XP Professional?)

Laptop is XP Home and desktop is 2000 Professiona. Thanks, I'll try putting
in the full username and check for file sharing. How do you check to see if
Simple File Sharing is off? Thanks again.
