I have a desktop and laptop computer in my workgroup. Both computers can see
each other when I look at Microsoft Windows Networks. Both computers are
running Windows XP Home, one has an ethernet connections to the router and
the other a wireless connection. The problem I have is when I try to access
the other computer over the network I get the following error:

\\Master is not accessable.You might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have
acccess permissions.

Access denied.

I can not find anywhere in the Microsoft help that addresses this problem.
Any suggestions??

I have this issue when I first get a PC on my home network. I have fixed it
by pinging the IP number first and then go to the pc by \\MASTER and it seems
to work. Give it a shot.

If the Windows Firewall [or any other host/software firewall] is enabled on
your computers they will not allow access from the other computer unless you
enable the exception for file and print sharing. If that is the problem be
sure to configure the exception to be only for your network. Also verify
that you can ping each computer from the other [ping computername or ping
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] by both name and IP address to see if basic network
connectivity works or not . You can find the current IP address of a
computer by running the command ipconfig /all. --- Steve

Hi Steven

Thanks for the input. I can ping the other comouter on the network with no
problem. I can even see them in the network neighbourhood window. The
problem is when I click on the icon for that computer I get the access
denied. I know there must be some security setting that is wrong that is not
letting computers on the network gain access to the computer as a whole. I
have the files and printers shared, but it still gives me the same access
denied error.

Try to access the other computer by it's IP address as in entering
\\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx in the run box on the computer you are trying to connect
from to see if that works. For instance to access computer with IP address
of 192.168.1.5 enter \\192.168.1.5 in the run box. You also need to
configure your computers to share files on the network. If you are not sure
how to do that use Help and Support and search for sharing. Since you are
behind a NAT/PAT router try booting your computers into Safe Mode with
networking to see if that works. Boot the computer that you are trying to
access first. If Safe Mode with networking works then you have software or
host firewall on your computer blocking access. Also run the command
nbtstat -n on each computer and you should see at least three registered
names for each computer and four for the computer that is acing as master
browser. --- Steve
