- Adequate Security
- Posted by Greg Maxey on January 12th, 2006
I am recovering from both an expensive Christmas season and a hard drive
failure.
Before the HD failure, I was on the last legs of a subscription of Norton
Internet Security 2005. I bought it via web download and so I don't have
any disc. I am lousy at keeping records and so I new that it would be a
waste of time to contact Symantec begging for another download.
I am in the Navy and fortunately Uncle Sugar makes avaialable Norton
AntiVirus CE to anyone with a .mil e-mail address. Absent anything better, I
installed thas in addition to enabling the WindowsXP Security Center
Firewall.
Question, am I secure or am I vulerable to gang rape by a band of internet
hackers?
Thanks

Hi Greg.
I think you will be fine with Norton CE and Windows XP Firewall particularly
if you are the only user of the computer and follow safe internet browsing
practices. The firewall that comes with Norton Internet Security will also
manage outbound access and if you think you need that you can always
download something like Zone Alarm which is free for personal use. Of course
make sure that your virus definitions are kept up to date and that it scans
your emails and downloads. Email attachments are a large source of malware.
If you don't have a current spyware detection and removal program AdAware SE
is free and pretty decent. Keeping current with Windows critical security
updates at Windows Updates is also very important and can be automated.
Backups of your important data will make life easier if something bad does
happen [including hard drive failure] and if you can make a Ghost type image
of your system drive that is also great because it can take just minutes to
be up and running again instead of having to reinstall everything. Good luck
in the Navy!

Stephen,
Thanks for the thorough reply. I am pretty much doing everything that you
suggested. I do have Spy-Bot and AdAware that I run occassionally.
As for the Navy, I have had reasonable success for nearly 29 years. If good
luck is coming it better come soon as I am nearing the day I drop my anchor
ashore for the last time ;-)
