I lost the ability to sign on as administraor on my laptop. I can not
install or change anything on the computer. Can anyone lead me the
right direction as to what to do now?

When you create additional user accounts, the Administrator account is automatically hidden.

For XP Pro: Press CTRL-ALT-DEL twice at the Welcome Screen, with no other users logged on. You'll get the older logon dialog. Enter Administrator and any password that you have set for that account.

To enable the Administrator account on the new Windows XP logon screen in Windows XP Pro, visit my web site, www.dougknox.com and go to the Windows XP Utilities section. Follow the link for Enable Administrator Account ......

This small VB application will make the registry change necessary for the Administrator account to be available on the Welcome Screen. If you prefer to do it manually, click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserLis t\

Note: There is a space between Windows and NT in the above Key.

Add the Administrator account if necessary and/or change the Administrator value to 1

For XP Home, you can only log into the built in Administrator account in Safe Mode, so the fixes above will be of little use.

Reboot the computer tapping F8 each second.
Select Safe Mode at the menu.
Log in as Administrator.
Go to User Accounts in Control Panel and create a new account from there.
Or you can upgrade the Limited to Administrator.

But it is not recommended to use Administrator routinely.
Instead use a Limited account for routine and only use an Administrator for
tasks requiring it.

The systems properties registered name was changed to the new "owner"; however, when the Advanced tab is used and they try to delete the old administrative users name the delete button is greyed and they can't delete. If it need to be added, exactly what is the wording and values,etc.?

The situation involves a nasty divorce and the computer owner want to erase
all traces of the ex-spouse which appears to have been accomplished except
for the sys prop. advanced users profile.

Any suggestions for further steps to accomplish this final removal?
