I have more than one Hard Drives on my System
One for the OS and it files...
the other for data
and I do have some external USB Drives.

A while back I encrypted some folders on my data drive...

Over the Christmas Holidays my primary drive when out....(would not
boot...etc)

I've rebuilt the System Drive... but not I can't access the encrypted files

am I screwed?

How can I remove the encryption..and access the files?

If you didn't make a backup of your cert/key, you are probably screwed, yes.
EFS does work. I don't suppose you had a backup of your entire system, did
you?

Why do I get an "Access Denied" error every time I try to read a file even
though I've double-checked my permissions, and they're ok?Featured Product:

No..I was actually going to make a back up BEFORE the crash
There were no indications of problems with the system

I still have the HD..and haven't erased or formatted it...it's intact.
it just want boot/load

In this case that will not help as the user appears to have destroyed the
user's EFS private key that is stored in the user profile when rebuilt the
computer assuming he formatted the system drive. The only solution would be
if a backup exists of the user's profile that contains the EFS private key
or the best option is that they had been exported to a password protected
..pfx file on external media. --- Steve

If you can still read it from another operating system you might be able to
access the EFS private key to decrypt the files. Elcomsoft makes a program
to do such. the free trial version will let you know if the EFS private keys
can be found and then you will need to enter the password to use it. The
trial version will decrypt only small files. For $99 you can get the full
version. Otherwise try an in place upgrade/repair install of the crashed
hard [depending on exactly what is wrong with it]drive to see if you can
make it functional enough to at least decrypt your EFS files but either way
try to back your user profile from the crashed drive ASAP and if possible
image the whole drive. --- Steve

If you have any chance of retrieving your encrypted files this seems to be
the best option (at least that I found). Read the limitations and download
the demo if you think you have a chance. It not too likely you will be able
to recover the files with a demo version but at least you'll know what your
chances are. If the application does not solve your problem I suggest you
save the files for possible future retrieval... Information technology keeps
making progress and it's possible that in the not to far future the right
application will come out that presents the possibility to recover access to
your files, I hope.
