Screensaver in group policy with user control of what screensaver?
Posted by Zumi on March 10th, 2008

Hello,

I have been doing some searches to see the recommended approach to the group
policy options for enabling a screensaver password via group policy for users
who forget to lock their desktops. It appears i have to choose the
executable which is good for security but, not so good for keeping users
happy.

i am wondering if there is a way to force screensaver password but, leave
the choice of what specific screensaver up to the users (not choosing an
executable in group policy)?

is this possible?

I have XP desktops mostly (few Vista) and Windows 2003 domains.

thanks in advance

Yes, you can set your screen saver Group Policy up this way:
Open the group policy you would like to edit, and go to:
User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\Display

There are three items that deal with the screen saver there:
Screen Saver: Set this to enabled
Screen Saver Timeoute: Set this to your specified time
Screen Saver executable name: set this to Not Configured

This will do what you want it to, but if the user does not have a screen
saver selected, it will not work, so the users can easily disable the screen
saver by selecting "No Screen Saver."

If they can disable it then that won't work then. I need to enforce
screensaver.

I guess we have to choose the executable.

Thanks for the reply.
