I am trying to update a machine with Windows Update and no matter how I get
to that page, it won't begin the update process 1) start/programs/windows
update 2) From a web page, tools/windows update 3) Microsoft.com, navigating
to windows update.

I was able to download Windows Defender, but it will not install.

I also tried to go the Help and Support from Start Programs to roll back the
machine under System Restore and that page will not come up.

I did install Spybot and was able to run that until it found no more problems.

What is Automatic Updates set to in Control Panel ?

Open the Services console
Start > Run > type in

services.msc

Click OK or press Enter

Double click on Automatic Updates.
Is Automatic Updates set to Automatic ?
Double click on Background Intelligent Transfer Service [BITS].
Is BITS set to Manual or Automatic ?

If not, then please set them to the above. BITS can be set to Manual and
Automatic updating can take place.

Close the Services console. Automatic Updates in the *Control Panel*
must be set to one of the first 3 options for the next step. If it's
Turned off, then the following will do nothing.
Now go to Start > Run > type in

wuauclt /detectnow

Click OK or press Enter
What happens ?

What 'problems' did Spybot find ?
What is the installed antivirus/security suite and did it detect any
malware ?

making this hard drive a slave on another PC, backing up what I can back up
and re-installing Window XP.

I could not even install Multi-AV which has worked for me before.

I think the reformating and starting over is my best options, because basic
functions like cut & past and searching do not work let alone the bigger
things like windows updates.

If you think I should try your suggestions let me know othewise I will start

The machine that I am flattening the hard drive on is not my machine. I am
trying to save the quickbooks data files. It is a business computer for a
