- winxp pro admin security issues
- Posted by Mtnclimbers on March 15th, 2006
1.winxp pro sp1
2. Unable to look at System Information - Access denied even though my
logon is Admistrator.
3. Unable to perform Windows Update Express Mode. Keep getting error
message x080070424 Believe it has something to do with Admin access
level.
4. Updated BitsAdmin util but unable to run in cmd for Bitsadim /util
/repairservice/force - it also appears to be related to access issues.
How can I verify that My Adminstrator has correct privelage or reset
them?

Verify that you are logged on as a local administrator. You can use the
command net user username to see your group membership. If you are indeed an
administrator try booting into Safe Mode to see if that makes any difference
in case you have a startup/logon service/process causing the problem. Check
permissions on the executable such as for bitsadmin.exe to make sure that
administrators have full control and you are not a member of any group that
has deny permissions to the file. if you can find anything obvious you can
use secedit to reset security settings back to default defined levels as
shown in the second link below. You also should consider the possibility
that you have a malware problem on your computer and to check for that with
virus scans also in Safe Mode and use the latest definitions for whatever
program you use as malware will often attempt to limit the administrator
account. --- Steve

I attempt to reset the security levels with the secedit command but it
appeared to execute but then a pop-up window for Automating Secuirty
Configuration Management window. This window is only for help on
Security. It appears that secedit did not work for the same reason
that I could not execute Bitsadmin because of my adminstrator
privileages screwed up.
Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Try copying and pasting the command from the KB article if you did not do
that as one error and the command will not work and you will get the help
screen for the command. If none of that helps try using the AT command to
open a command prompt screen and then try using secedit again. Set the time
for two minutes into the future and wait for the command screen to
art. --- Steve

Thanks. I was changing the %windir% to c:/windows and that caused the
problem to go to the help text.
Command is now running on my laptop. It appears that it is resetting
the security but it will take some time to run.
I will let you know if it completed ok and if it worked or did not
work.
