3 Computers on one network and only 2 can see all 3
Posted by FRSwitzer on October 8th, 2005

I have 3 Computers running off a Linksys BEFSW41 router and the 2 desktops
can see and communicate to each other and the Laptop, but the Laptop can not
see or communicate to the Desktops. The 2 desktops are running XP Pro and the
Laptop is running XP Home. I currently am sharing Printers and File Folders
off the 2 Destops and need to do the same with the Laptop.

Do you have the same username and password on the laptop as you do on the
two desktops?

Yes, I have one account on each computer that is identical and even when
entering through that account on all threee computers, the desktops are
respondiung accordingly and the Laptop is not. I am thinking it has something
to do with Windows XP home versus Windows XP Pro. Actually, while I have the
same User names on all three, One of the Desktops did not have a password on
that unique account but it still worked just fine. The Laptop and the other
Desktop has the same account and passward and the Desktop can see the Laptop
but the Laptop can not see the desktops at all.

Are there firewalls on the desktops? If so, are they allowing access to the
laptop?

Actually, One Desktop only has Microsoft Windows firewall enabled, the 2nd
has McAfee Internet security from Comcast and the Laptop has McAfee. Do you
think that they are blocking? Why is it that when I click view Workgroup
computers I get "Workgroup not available" Permissions may not be granted,
contact system administrator or something like that.

Could be a firewall problem. Happy hunting.
