i normally wouldn't ask such a simple question but i haven't installed my
own OS in years, and i currently live 1200 miles from the guy that built my
current computer so i can't exactly take it back to him.

The question is why go to a 64-bit operating system?
Do you actually have 64-bit applications that could benefit?

i installed 8GB of ram in my computer for video editing. i need 64bit to
utilize all of it.

my research and I prefer working with XP pro over working with Vista. Hence
my decision to install the 64 bit edition. I've already got the 64 bit
edition OEM software disc and all i have to do is backup my hard-drive and

Install your OS following the steps Windows XP (all versions) leads you
through anyway during an install.
Be sure you have all the hardware drivers ready to install - as 64-bit
drivers can be sometimes difficult to come by (less so now than in the
past.)
