- File and Settings Transfer Wizard can't locate destination PC
- Posted by MWACSNY on March 13th, 2006
Using this wizard to transfer a client's files to a new PC, I found that when
running the wizard on the old PC and specifying a destination PC on the
network which had run the wizard first, the latter can not be located.
Alternatively, when specifying a shared drive on the new PC when running the
wizard on the old PC, the transfer appears to go through but upon searching
the new PC the files are not found in the folders they should be in but
rather seem to accumulate in a DAT file on the root of the drive and I have
no idea how to use that to extract the files and distribute them to their
proper folders or to apply transfered settings to the proper apps, e.g.
Outlook Express. I have used the wizard successfully to transfer from a
similar old PC to another virtually identical new PC using the first method
to locate the destination and was very pleased with the results, i.e. all
documents in My Documents transferred and all e-mail folders with their
contents transfered in Outlook Express. Are there any suggestions as to what
may be going wrong this time and what I might do besides manual xcopy in the
(DOS) Command window of the old PC to the shared drive in the new PC? Mike W.

I'd be very careful with that Wizard, I've known it trash the registry. I'd
also beware that what seems to be a successful transfer may have relocated
the user's folders in the wrong places, for example 'Favorites' being found
under c:\Windows instead of under C:\Documents and Settings\user\ The main
danger here is that the user will not be able to back-up their data owing to
it being in the wrong place. But they may not know this, of course.
My suggestion would be to transfer manually. I find that Servant Salamander
is a good tool for selective copying of folders (http://altap.cz) - The free
version is adequate, though you need to change its settings to include hidden
files and directories, and to confirm drag&drop operations.
