I've created a slipstreamed CD of Windows XP with service pack 3 and
installed it in a test computer.

All seems to be working fine (altough it would have been really nice to
include IE7, VMP11 and the .NET Framework in it), but IE7 doesn't install.

I tried the installation several times: it downloads its updates, runs the
malware removal tool, starts installing IE, and then fails miserably and
asks to reboot.

Anyone experiencing this issues or willing to test it?

Been there, done that. No issues. IE7 installs flawlessly on WinXP Pro with
SP3. The only difference is I manually patch WinXP SP2 with the huge (300+
MB) SP3.

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
installing IE7 and install any critical updates offered. If Optional
Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it
to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.

That was a clean installation of Windows XP SP3, no programs running, no
antivirus installed, *nothing* installed other than Windows itself. A check
on Windows Update only made me install WGA (shouldn't it have been included
with the SP?), and then suggested installing WGA, .NET Framework, IE7 and
WMP 11; no other update was suggested and/or required.

I had already downloaded the IE7 installer and was running it from my
computer's disk; Internet connection was available, no proxies or firewalls
in between. The same installer always worked flawlessly on XP SP2 machines.

I'll do some other testings later on, and I'll post the IE7 setup log; I
strongly believe this is a SP3 issue.

Yes.

No, I have the installer available because I'm often in need of installing
it around; it's quite recent, howewer, and it also does update itself before
beginning the actual installation.

Seems like this was the problem: I re-downloaded the installer from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/dow.../getitnow.mspx and it installed
finely.
The file size is different from the file I had, and the digital signature is
newer, so I guess it actually *gets* updated sometimes; but this is
undocumented.

Anyway, problem solved...
