Trying to install WinXP Pro off a CD, I get the error message "Setup was
unable to build the list of files to be copied. The system cannot find the
file specified."
One knowledge base article about this message (301933) says that the Windows
source files are supposed to be in a folder named i386. Another KB article
(281652, regarding "unattended" installation) says something about the
command "/copydir:i386\tempfiles".
I don't know what to do with this information. Both articles seem to assume
I'm installing from a command-line interface rather than just going thru the
out-of-the-box setup dialog. Both imply that I'm supposed to be doing some
sort of file manipulation, but I don't know where this i386 folder is
supposed to be or where I'm supposed to get the "source files" to populate
it. Obviously, I'm missing something somewhere.
In case it matters, the WinXP is labeled as a version that includes SP2 and
that is "for PCs with Windows 95 or earlier, or PCs without Windows." And
the machine I'm trying to install it on currently runs Win95, and I want to
wipe the whole drive and replace it with a fresh install of XP.
