I have a computer which has USB 1 ports on the motherboard. I have purchased
and installed a USB 2 card to use with an external USB drive. The USB 2
connections seem to work when copying small files. However when I try to do a
larger backup I get an error "Delayed Write Failed" and the external hard
disk freezes and disappears from the available drives. If I connect the
external drive to one of the USB 1 ports the backup proceeds (although
slowly).
Can USB 1 and 2 co-exist?
I have thought to disable the USB 1 or update the drive on the USB 2 but
cannot identify which is which in the rather extensive list of USB devices.
How do you distinguish them?
Would disabling the USB 1 devices be useful?
I have checked for information on the error but all instances of solutions
do not relate to this problem. Most seem to relate to Windows 2000 wheras I
am running XP Pro SP2.

Yes.

The controller says "ENHANCED" or USB 2.0" in the description.

Use those anyway. The idea behind it is the same. My first assumption,
however, is that your drive (external drive) is not the best - it is not
"defective", it is just not the best.

At first I thought the drive may be defective and replaced it with no change.
These two have been Western Digital. An earlier one that worked was a Seagate
but the USB 2 was not installed at that stage so I am working through issues.

I fail to understand why people do not buy a packaged external USB 2 drive
from one of the major players. For the price of a drive and an external
case, you can get a nice Seagate, Maxtor, Western Digital etc. packaged
drive that is almost guaranteed to work from the initial plug-in.

If you are putting the drives in boxes, it is the box the drives are in -
get a better quality external box.
If you are buying the name-brand external boxes with the drives in them -
very seldom should you see the problem you mention.

Price has a lot to do with it (you may have the extra $$$s, I don't). As
well I often have surplus hard disks. I also have the software for
backup..........
Besides the unit was working very nicely until a client needed a 120MB hard
disk in a hurry & I happened to have one in the case.

So, if it was for a client price (your money) doesn't even enter into the
picture. And using "surplus" drives, and then having problems, is just not
worth the aggravation. Well, to you it may be!

Check out the reasons what happens when you get this error message.
Delayed Write Failure" simply is a physical write failure on the drive.
It's "delayed" because Windows is buffering and gathering writes for
efficiency - so the application that performed the write operation has
long moved on, and cannot be informed of the write failure anymore. So
you don't get a "save failed" from your application, you get a "delayed
write failed" from the OS. Delayed Write Failures are the result of
write caching. This is often a problem with external drives unless you
disable that caching. To do so, go to Device Manager, and highlight the
external drive. Then right click to get its properties, then select the
Policies tab. Check the "Optimize for Quick Removal" checkbox. That
disables Write Caching for that drive.
