windowsxp starts but won't run
Posted by Know enough to be dangerous on November 5th, 2005

I installed windows xp over windows 2000 over windows 98 as windows 98 became
corrupt after trojan.alemod infection. Windows 2000 is on a seperate drive
but when I boot i am asked which o/s i want to use. I select windows xp (on
same drive as windows 98) and start up screen (black w/windows xp logo and
bar beneath it) runs and then i receive a blank screen not even a prompt to
run cmd.exe to at least troubleshoot. ANY SUGGESTIONS are appreciated as I
have important information on drive that I am just trying to access to copy
so I don't lose it but am at a loss where to begin. THANKS IN ADVANCE TO
EVERYONE!!!

Your sender's name appears appropriate. Never ever upgrade
a system without first saving your important data files! I urge
you to save them now, before you get deeper into trouble.

Upgrading an infected and corrupt Win98 system to WinXP
is pointless. Your best option is to perform a clean installation
of WinXP, after saving your data files.

OK...so what would be my best course of action...how would i run a "BACKUP"
of files? from safe mode accessories?

That's what I would do, to an independent medium. After backing
up your files, check

a) that they are all there, and
b) that you can retrieve them

then do a fresh installation of WinXP. You will have to
re-install all your applications too.
