- XP Defragmenter
- Posted by Frank on April 19th, 2006
In an attempt to get defragmentation better than 73%, I loaded O&O
Defragmenter. Apparently it set itself as default and disabled the XP
defrag. How do I get XP defrag back?
Also, after recovering from a series of crashes attributed to a device
driver, my defragmentation dropped from 95% to 73%. What can I do to improve
the disk fragmentation?

It looked like the right anweer. I was able to execute the the first
direction and got a window saying that the files were restored; but the
defragmenter still is not listed in system tools 9even after a reboot). I
looked in windows\inf for dfrg.inf but couldn't find such a file.

Frank,
The shortcut is probably just missing from the Start Menu.
First see if Disk Defragmenter will open.
Start | Run | Type: dfrg.msc | Click OK
Does Disk Defragmenter open?
Create a shortcut in the System Tools folder...
Paste the following line into Start | Run and click OK...
%allusersprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\System Tools
Right click an empty spot in the right hand pane, point to New and click
Shortcut.
Paste the following line into the location box...
%SystemRoot%\System32\dfrg.msc
Click the Next button.
Type or paste: Disk Defragmenter in the name box and click the Finish
button.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner.
I now have the defragmenter back in system tools and the defrag window opens
but it won't analyze or defrag. I have DCOM Service Process Launcher
selected and in auto.
Aany thoughts?

The only reason that I know of for nothing happening when clicking on
Defragment or Analyze is that the DCOM Server Process Launcher service needs
to be running.
You stated that the DCOM Server Process Launcher service is in Automatic.
Is it running?
