administrator do not have create access on the server...
Posted by Per-Olof Olsson on April 4th, 2008

Hi

I get a message that says

The "\\servername\domain\users$\username" home folder was not created
because you do not have create access on the server. The user account has
been updated with the new home folder value but you must create the directory
manually after obtaining the required access rights.

This is after trying to apply \\servername\domain\users$\%username% to a
number of users when creating the home folder under the user profiles tab,
all but ONE user was successfully added to the share and the last one i got
the above message from.

I found the KB below and got a hotfix from MS but that was to old to be run
on that SBS2003R2 machine(previously windows updated fully).

There was two parts in the hotfix, and the Adprop.dll from 2003 i havent
tried to manuelly add.... maybe i should? but the on already on the system is
from 2007...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824688

Any suggestions?

Best Regards

Hello Customer,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that When you use the
\\servername\domain\users$\%username% variable to change the location of a
user's home folder to an folder, you may receive the following error
message:

The UserName home folder was not created because you do not have create
access on the server. The user account has been updated with the new home
folder value but you must create the directory manually after obtaining the
required access rights.

If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can
resolve this issue:

1. Please do not use "$" in the shared folder path. I know the "$" means
the hide shared folder, but it is not recommended in Home Folder setting.

2. Ensure the shared folder \\servername\domain\users\%username% is
existing. You need to create subfolder for each user with the username. For
example, the user called John. You need to create a subfolder John under
users, like \\servername\domain\users\John.

3. Ensure the user do have the rights to access the shared folder. You can
log John on his client computer, and try to access
\\servername\domain\users\John, ensure John can write files in the shared
folder.

4. Ensure you use the properly steps to set Home Folder for domain users.
Please refer to the steps as the following KB:

How to assign a home folder to a user
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=816313

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Sincerely,

Terence Liu,

Hi Terence!

I think I first have to clarify the problem further, i was a bit short on
information now I see. Sorry about that.

I have created a folder structure on the server on the D: drive
D:\data\users

And i have created the home folders for each user as I described ealier, and
all users but one called "con" was i able to create via the %username%.

And im logged on the the server as domain administrator, open a explorer
browsing to "D:\data\users" and manually try to create the folder called
"con" and as soon as i have tyoed "con", press enter, the name of the folder
is changed to "New folder" instead of creating the "con" folder. I cant
rename the folder in any way to "con". That is strange?!

I would very much like to user hidden home folders, and i have done so for
the rest of the users so i hope i will be possible for this last one to...

Why is it not recommended to use $ (hidden) folder for home folders?

Maybe this will give you more idea on the problem.

Best Regards

Hi:

Along with COM1, COM2, LPT and the like, CON is a reserved name, left over
from the old days when dinosaurs roamed the earth. If you google "create
folder con", or the like you will hit several possibilities, such as:

http://kerneltrap.org/node/5772

No guarantee that it will work for you or anyone. Not tested by me.

Something to do with CONsole, IIRC.

Hello Customer,

Thank you for your update. Let's also thank Larry for the input.

Larry is correct, we unable to create a folder called "con" in whole
system. It is reserved for system device drivers. Please refer to the
following KB:

MS-DOS Device Driver Names Cannot be Used as File Names
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/74496

For the hide shared folder, if you do not receive any error, you can use it
for Home Folder.

Note: Shared folder safety is depended on permission (shared permission and
NTFS permission), but not hiding. Of course, if you like, you can hide them.

Thank you and have a nice day,

Sincerely,

Terence Liu,
