- Can you point me to instructions to add a SBS 2003 machine to a domain with a 2000 Server DC
- Posted by Richard May on July 28th, 2004
I have a small network with a single server running 2000 Server which
is the domain controller. This server is purely used to run a
specialist piece of software and we want to make the minimum
(preferably none) of changes to this machine.
We are planning to add a second server running SBS 2003 to the network
to act as a general purpose server. We want both servers to share the
same domain.
Can anyone tell me the best way to do this, with the minimum of
disruption to the existing 2000 Server and its existing domain, or
point me to resources from MS saying how to do this, as I cannot find
any exmaples for my scenario.
Thanks,
Richard May

Your SBS Server would have to take over the roles of FSMO in your AD Domain.
You can keep the other server as an DC but your SBS Server will run the show

Thanks for the reference, however I am still slightly confused as to
the correct procedure.
The documents on that page for 2000 Server refer to upgrading the
existing server, rather than putting in a new one. Do I need to follow
the migration instruction in the document for upgrading from NT4
Server, or can I simply install the new SBS Server, make it a second
DC in the domain and then transfer the FSMOs?

What I am about to say, although tested by some of the MVPs and seems to
work well, is neither documented or supported at this time by Microsoft
You can install the new server with just the OS portion to begin with, run
DC promo, then transfer the FSMO roles to the new server as well as the
Global Catalogue and then install the remaining portion of the SBS Suite
