- Internet access whilst connected to VPN
- Posted by John Chapman on October 19th, 2004
Hi
We have a SBS 4.5 installation with ADSL broadband using router with
standard two NIC solution. Remote users can VPN in without problem but
cannot access the Internet whilst connected via VPN. VPN is RAS running
PPTP.
Is there any simple and persistent way of achieving Internet access at the
same time?
Regards
John

You can enable this, but it is turned off by default as It's a potential
security risk for a possibly unprotected remote client to be connected
to the internet directly while having a pipe open to the domain, and
thus providing a potential channel for malware/hackers.
The User -should- access the internet via the VPN Connection.
To enable the User to have concurrent VPN and Local Internet:
- Right/Alternate Mouse-Click on Network Places
- Properties
- Right/Alternate Mouse-Click on VPN connection
- Properties
- Networking
- Protocol (TCP/IP)
- Advanced
- De-select
"Use default gateway on remote host"

If they look around the VPN connection they created they will find a check
box labeled "use default gateway" or similar language. Uncheck the box and
restart the vpn

Or, install the Proxy Client on the remote VPN PC and have it access the
Internet via the VPN connection - bit of a PITA though as when not connected
you'd have to set the PC to connect without this...
