Only 2 out of 4 PCs see the entire network
Posted by Mo on September 25th, 2003

One server, 4 workstations.....

The server runs Win NT Small Business Server 4.5 . One PC is running

Win XP Pro. Two are running Win ME and the fourth

is running Win 98 SE. The server sees all of the computers. The XP

box sees all of the computers. One of the ME

boxes sees all of the computers. The other ME box only sees the server

and the 98 machine. If I do a "Find Computer" on that one it will

find the XP and other ME computers but only by IP address. The 98 machine
sees

the server and the ME box that sees it. WINS is enabled.

The 98 box needs to see and access files on the XP box. The 98 machine

can ping the XP box, but cannot see it. All the machines are

plugged into an 8 port 10/100 Fast Ethernet Switch.

What am I missing here? Why don't all the computers see each other?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!!

Question: why does the client need to see and/or access other clients?

The 98 client needs to see the XP client because the XP user does all the
company invoicing and handles all incoming email and the 98 client (he's the
boss) wants to be able to access these files. (Yes, those could all be put
in a shared file on the server). But more importantly, there is a Laserjet
printer attached to the XP box that he needs to print to from time to time.

Got File and printersharing loaded on all clients?
It would be easier if you would share the printer from the server. Can't you
connect that to the network?
Got Netbios over TCP/IP enabled or DHCP-settings on the WINS-tab of the
nic-properties-TCP/IP?

Yes, file and print sharing is enabled on all clients. And yes, it would be
easier to share the printer from the server, but moving the printer to the
server room isn't feasable - there's no room for it in there and the users
offices are far away from it. We could leave it where it is and get a
print server, but that would require a pretty major wiring job.

We ran some NBTSTAT commands, with the following results:

NBTSTAT -S (ran on 10.0.0.2, which is the server) Note: all machines were on
and logged on to the network
NetBios connection table:
Connected 10.0.0.5 (that is the XP box)
Connected 10.0.0.10 (that's the one ME box that sees the entire network)

NBTSTAT -r (ran on server)
Resolved by Broadcast = 1
Resolved by Name Server = 11
Registered by Broadcast = 15
Registered by Name Server = 2
NetBios name resolved by broadcast: Elainenew (that is 10.0.0.5, ths XP box)

NBTSTAT -r (ran on 10.0.0.10 - the ME box that sees the entire network)
Resolved by Broadcast = 0
Resolved by Name Server = 6
Registered by Broadcast = 0
Registered by Name Server =6

NBTSTAT -r (ran on 10.0.0.5 - the XP box)
Resolved by Broadcast = 0
Resolved by Name Server = 14
Registered by Broadcast = 0
Registered by Name Server = 6

NBTSTAT -r (ran on 10.0.0.6 - the Win 98 box)
Resolved by Broadcast = 0
Resolved by Name Server = 0
Registered by Broadcast = 24
Registered by Name Server = 0

NBTSTAT -r (ran on 10.0.0.3 - the ME box that was only seeing the 98 machine
and the server)
Resolved by Broadcast = 0
Resolved by Name Server = 4
Registered by Broadcast = 0
Registered by Name Server =6

Ran NBTSTAT -R on 10.0.0.3, which purged and reloaded the
remote cache name table

NBTSTAT -r again on 10.0.0.3 and got the same results as on the other
ME box (10.0.0.10). So now this second ME client can see all others and can
use the printer on the XP client

Tried NBTSTAT -R on the Win 98 machine, but that didn't change
anything.

Does this info help at all?
