- OT: two users logged on
- Posted by Gary Karasik on December 26th, 2003
More info regarding "Can't delete profile." When logged in as
MachineName.Administrator, if I go to MyComputer/Advanced/UserProfiles, I
can't delete the profile Domain.Administrator. It seems as if both
users--MachineName.Administrator and Domain.Administrator--are logged in at
the same time.
Turns out they are: SysInternals's utility PSLOGGEDON.EXE reports that BOTH
users are logged on at the same time. This is why Domain.Administrator can't
be deleted. Can't delete a UserProfile while it's logged on. (If logged on
as Domain.Administrator, then PSLOGGEDON reports that only
Domain.Administrator is logged on. MachineName.Administrator can be deleted.
Creating new profiles and logging in as them does not solve the problem. And
of course I can't create a new profile for Domain.Administrator because it's
logged on.
I googled this but can't find any mention of anything similar. Anyone got an
article to point me to?

Hi Gary,
I'm sure you've got a good reason why you want to delete the
domain.administrator profile. Log in as another user with local
administratorrights. Can you delete that profile now?

It's not actually the Domain Administrator's profile. I just used that to
make the explanation simple. The problem is that if I'm logged in as the
local machine administrator, I can't delete the other profile, and
PSLOGGEDON.EXE says that both profiles are logged in simultaneously.

Use Delprof.exe to remotely delete the users profiles(s) from another
workstation or server?

it would be interesting though to give another domain user admin priv's and
see if they can delete the profile. I was going to suggest this to your
other thread but thought I'd give you some time to think about it :-)
PS, there's not some service running as the undeletable profile's user, is
there?

Same thing happens--the system sees the second profile as logged on at the
same time and the delete option is greyed out.

That won't work on a profile that's logged on. While the machine was
regooted but not yet logged on, I deleted the profile remotely using
regedit. It recreated itself the next time the machine logged on. I'm
thinking the machine's possessed. I've already run several different Trojan
scanners with negative results. I'm desperately trying to avoid a
wipe/reinstall because this particular machine's heavily tweaked, and
resetting everything up is going to take days.

OK, don't log on. Use an admin share from another workstation (preferably
not the server) to delete the profile folder, stuff the registry.
If there's something in the profile which is being fired no matter who logs
on we should, at least, be able to identify it.

Hi Gary,
What kind of program is running on that XP that you needed to tweak it?

Tried that. Deleted the profile *AND* deleted the profile entry from the
ProfileList in the registry. Next time I logged on that machine the profile
was recreated.
HOWEVER
I fixed the problem last night. I ran across a KB article for NT4 that
described the symptoms exactly. Said the problem was caused by a "stuck"
registry hive not unloading and the solution was to connect remotely to the
problem registry, find the stuck key, and unload the hive. I did that, and
the problem went away.
