- OWA 4.5 on non-standard port?
- Posted by Doug on September 2nd, 2004
Hi,
Is it advisable to put the default web site on a different port number if
I'm sharing it live on the web? Will this have any implications for OWA? I
have only just set this up and I'm about ready to make it go live.
Thanks,
Doug.

What do you wish to accomplish with this? What other (publicly accessible)
websites are you planning on hosting on this server besides OWA? Use SSL for
OWA...I wouldn't host any other such websites, but would find a cheapo
hosting company for that. Even OWA is enough of a risk.

I just want to have OWA publicly accessible. Nothing else needs to be.
Can you point me in the direction of how to set it up with SSL, do I need to
buy a certificate from someone like Verisign?

OK - no, you don't have to. You can publish your own. What version of SBS
are you using? With 2003 I believe you can have the wizard do this.
When you're done you just open up port 443 to the internal IP....

I wish we had 2003, no it's SBS 4.5 Perhaps I should have made it more clear
in the title.
So if I open port 433 to the internal nic in my firewall, then I'll be able
to access OWA via https://my_ip/exchange ? And then make sure port 80 is
closed, is that right?
Are there any other issues I should be aware of?
Thanks.

I really wouldn't want to publish OWA on SBS4.5. IIS4 is just too
insecure, IMHO.

You need to install/configure SSL, then yes. :-)
Other that you'd find OWA in 2003 a lot more fun, not really!
