Regarding the connections problem in Exchange Administrator
You might try this one
XADM: "Extension 'SMTP' Could Not Be Loaded" Error Message Occurs When You View the Internet Mail Service Properties
See this link
http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?e...e=MSExchangeSA
regarding the event viewer error.
If it were me, it think I would probably uninstall the POP3 connector, and the IMS.
then re apply Exchange 5.5 SP 4
then re install the IMS
Then re install the POP3 Connector

Mail IS coming and going as it should be via the POP3 connector. Users are having no troubles browsing at all. Mail does flow internally. I can not start the SA manually. I get an error in the event viewer as follows:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeSA
Event Category: General
Event ID: 1005
Date: 7/3/2003
Time: 3:45:27 PM
User: N/A
Computer: SERVER1
Description:
Unexpected error The remote procedure call failed and did not execute. Microsoft Windows NT ID no: 0xc00206bf occurred.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
I CAN open the Exchange Administrator, however I can't open certain parts of it such as under Connections I can't open the Internet Mail Service as it tells me Extension 'SMTP' could not be loaded. The MS Exchange System Attendant service is unavailable. Also, under protocols it doesn't list SMTP (which I believe it used to, not 100% sure). Thanks for your help...all of you.

Ok...here's a question. How do I uninstall the POP3 Connector and the IMS? I looked around and couldn't find anything. Then...how would I reinstall the IMS?

to be honest I have never installed the pop3 connector, but have you looked in Add and Remove programs??
In the Exchange Admin > Connections > can you click once on the IMS and then right click and delete???
Then open the exchange admin again and then its File > New > Other > Internet Mail Service
You must make sure DNS is configured on your network cards before you redo it

So a new turn of events for my problem has come up. While looking through what you shared with me and a little more searching on my own I was following some directions which told me to go into the Network Neighborhood Properties, select the Services tab, click on RPC Configuration and then click properties. This should put me into someplace to check on something. However, when I click on Properties for the RPC Configuration service I get an error message "Unable to access SOFTWARE subtree in registry". That can't be good. Any thoughts there? I'm about to go postal to get this place to buy me a new server to put MS SBS2000 on which I've had the software sitting in a box for a year now doing nothing.
