I KNOW THIS IS LIKE SPITTING IN THE WIND ...BUT IT'S FRIDAY AND I FEEL
LIKE POSTING THIS. THIS IS MY NEWSGROUP AND I'M TIRED OF HOW YOUR SPAM
IS SCREWING UP MY COMMUNITY.

IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING BETTER TO DO THAT TO DENIAL OF SERVICE SPAM
BLACKLISTERS, SEND VIRUSES INTO NEWSGROUPS, CAUSE ME TO GET TONS OF SWEN
EMAILS TO MY INBOX..... GO GET A REAL LIFE. GO GET A JOB. You
obviously are talented graphics artist and programmer. I'm sure you
could get a job somewhere.

IF YOU GET YOUR KICKS OUT OF TAKING THE INTERNET AND TURNING INTO A CESS
POOL OF MUCK THEN GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.

To Mr. ISP I need your help. You need to filter out the virus laden emails.

To Mr. Microsoft newsserver. Stop allowing attachments in the public
newsgroups. The mailservers cannot handle it and you can't keep up with
the attachments.

If this was a real community, we'd be hiring more police and guards to
help us out with the riffraff around here.

Okay.. Rant over for the day

Not all, but these are mostly the product of 12-year old boys. They're too
young to get jobs.

Yeah it sucks, i have had over 150 of the Microsoft looking Virus
attachments. I knew the 1st one was bogus as our creative friend may have
been good but the 'triangle' in O in Microsoft was not taken out, nice
try...

Something needs to be done as our clients are getting them now and at 1st
glances they look and feel real.

if your clients are running a decent spam filter, they should not be seeing
these fake Microsoft emails ... I have received over 1,000 of them in mym
mailbox, but everyone has been caught and put into a spam quarantine box.

I'm using IHSSE (IHateSpam Server Edition) from Sunbelt
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/

If you have a home or test server, ask their sales staff about a 5 user NFR
copy for $75

They also have a client (workstation) version as well. THeir software was
originally designed by GiantCompany - who only sells the client version
under the name SpamInspector.

No way round it, you've gotta have a white list of
accepted email addresses or domains. If your not on the
list you don't get in. There are ways of vetting people to
include on your white list. Think about it.

Susan,

According to Symantec, SWEN also attempts to propogate through Newsgroups.
Perhaps this is isn't a deliberate attempt to clog the NG, just a pour soul
who got stung by SWEN.

From Symantec's bulletin on SWEN:

"Transmission through newsgroups
The worm will enumerate the registry looking for newsgroup server addresses,
then attempt to contact that newsgroup server. If a newsgroup server is not
configured on the system, the worm will randomly select one from a
predefined list. The worm will download the available groups and post
messages to randomly selected groups. The messages posted to the newsgroups
are generated according to the same routine used for sending email."

Please read F-Secure's description of Swen for further information. They
claim (and I believe them!) that Swen harvests email addresses from
newsservers, in addition to the mechanism Symantec describes there.

sbradcpa@pacbell.net says...

heh - frustrated Susan!

I heard that MS implemented a 100Kb max size limit for all
their NG's. Can't verify that though.
