- Setting up SBS 2000 in existing domain
- Posted by JohnB on July 9th, 2003
I am in the process of installing a new server into an
existing domain. Currently a Windows 2000 Server exists.
I have installed the SBS machine as a member server
without setting up SBS. Can when setting up SBS will it
let me promote it to a domain controller?

I'm guessing you used the SBS CD set to get this far. Unfortunately my
advice is 'format c:' (I don't like how often I'm saying this recently, but
it is often best).
Use the CD from your 'standard' W2K package. This will allow you to join the
domain and manually promote the machine into domain control.
You then need to move the FSMO roles to the machine which will run SBS. (one
easy way of doing this is waiting for replication to complete and then
dcpromo the original DC out. You can even then dcpromo the original back
in.)
once the target machine has the fsmo roles you throw CD1 of the SBS set in
and follow the bouncing ball.
