Using only Exchange 2003 from SBS package on a Windows 2000 server
Posted by Chris Russo on January 25th, 2006

Hi there,

I've been googling and looking at documentation, but I can't find a
straightforward answer to this question. We just received a new
server from Dell that has SBS pre-installed on it, with the CD's
licenses, etc. However, because of some legacy software we have, this
server will have to run Linux (go ahead - flame away), so we're left
with an unused copy and license of SBS2003. We have an existing
Windows 2000 server that we'd prefer to keep on 2000 instead of
migrating to 2003, but would like the upgraded Exchange Server
functionality in Exchange Server 2003.

So, here's the question. MS's website says that SBS2003 is compatible
with Windows 2000 server - so does that mean I can just install
Exchange Server 2003 from the SBS2003 CD's onto my Windows 2000 box?
Are there any gotcha's in this process that you can think of? I can't
really seem to find a straightforward answer to this question.

Thanks very much!

-Chris

Nope, you can't do that Chris. All SBS components (Exchange, ISA, SQL,
etc.) must be installed on the -fully installed- SBS server (domain
controller). Also, the OEM software you got is permanently tied to the
server that you got from Dell unless you also bought MS Software Assurance
(wherein the full SBS installation could be moved to another server within
the limits of the Software Assurance agreement).
