Using Smarthost
Posted by Michael on November 29th, 2005

I have an office who is using DSL to connect to the internet. Unfortunately,
some of their business associates use Block list servers who block out DSL IP
Ranges, so this office has email returned to them as spam.

I think I understand how to setup the smarthost configuration; but I'm
having problems using my DSL account's smtp server to route mail using it. I
wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that the account mailbox
requires a user to log into the incoming mail server first, before allowing
mail to be sent out. If that is the case, is there something in the Exchange
System Manager that will do that?

Well I guess I had Smarthost set up correctly, it's just that my email is
delayed by several hours through two separate email hosts!!!

Not sure how else to work it, but it appears it is an ISP problem, not an
Exchange problem.

As a side note; When I set up my SMTP Connector to use smart host, send it
to my own email address, I get nothing. If I modify the SMTP Connector to use
DNS and send a 2nd email to my email address, both show up instantly!

Anyone know what that means?

I had sent about 6 emails using various settings of smarhosts, and all went
through once i sent the email using dns.

Confused in smtp land

When testing my above problem, I would send test emails to my self using the
remote server email account. Once I would receive an email, I would then send
a test email to one of the consultants who was block listing our DSL IP
range. Those apparently never went through the smarthost (stuck in queue),
and once I gave up and deleted the smarthost SMTP connector, they went
through the smallbusiness smtp and were in turn, block listed.

I called my ISP (valueweb) and tried to find out if they had a particular
setting for smart host, but they didn't really know what I was talking about,
so I just may not have had the smart host set up correctly through them.
