White Paper on Connecting Win98 to SBS 4.5
Posted by Rick Bond on June 2nd, 2004

I'm leaving the company that I've been with for the past 10 years (6 years
in they're IT dept) and I want to leave them with as much documentation as I
can. Does anyone have or know where I can find a white paper of such on
connecting a Windows 98 client to SBS 4.5?

Thanks
Rick Bond

Hi Rick,

Not much to do on a W98:
Network Configuration: tab Configuration: make sure Client for MS Networks,
TCP/IP and File and Printersharing are loaded.
Properties for Client MS: check login at Windows NT-domain, fill in the
netbios domainname.
Properties TCP/IP: obtain an IP from DHCP, use DHCP for WINS, no Gateway,
disable DNS,
Tab Identification: fill in the netbios domainname in filed Workgroup.

Install the Proxyclient.

Better still - run the Wizard from the SBS Console on the Server and have it
create the set-up disk for you. Saves having to do any of this manually...

That said, everything Marina said is right on the money (as usual)! :-)

Cheers,

David

I realize all of that...however...I'm concerned about how lost they are
going to be and would like to give them more than just "follow the wizard".
If there's not already something out there then I'll write something up.
Maybe they'll smack themselves after the first time of doing it at how easy
it is...but I want to leave them well documented.

Thanks

Thanks very much Cris for the link...and yes...my leaving is my idea. I've
accepted a position with a school system that is more money and closer to
home. I travel about 43 miles one way for work now and the new job is about
28 miles. My 2004 truck I bought in December already has 13,000 miles on
it, so I can stop tearing up every time I look at the odometer. ;-) haha
Being as how it's a school system with, I think, 500 + PC's...I'll be moving
away from SBS as well. Maybe in the future I'll get involved again and I
thank all the people that have helped me in here. Whomever takes my place
will be informed of this newsgroup and how great it is.

Best of luck Rick, sounds like a good opportunity and you never know, you
may find some SBS project out there on the side.

Come back here anytime
