Windows 2003 SBS R2 license question
Posted by Koala78 on July 13th, 2007

Hi,
I am in a situation that i need to change the domain name on the existing
Windows 2003 SBS R2 server. I search around and only way to change the
domain name on a SBS is to reinstall the server. I am planning to reinstall
the OS. I have a question regarding the existing license if you are
performing a clean install of the OS on an existing OS with 30 CALs. What
should i do with the license? Should i just go ahead and reinstall the OS
and then add the license back or need to do a license transfer. I am
confused here. I need some help!!...HELP.!!

Before you do, for what reason do you need to rename the AD? There's almost
never a valid reason.

BTW: You're in the wrong newsgroup.
SBS public Newsgroups:

SBS 4.x: microsoft.public.backoffice.smallbiz
SBS 2000: microsoft.public.backoffice.smallbiz2000
SBS 2003: microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs

if your current news server does not carry the mentioned groups you should
be able to connect directly to news.microsoft.com

Thanks for the information. I need to change because the customer requested.

Well unfortunately the customer will have to pay the price.
A re-install is the only way to change the Internal Domain Name.

You can back up the licenses ( from the Mgmt Console ) and re-apply them.
....or just re-enter the License keys.

does the customer want their ".local" internal domain name changed, which no
one ever sees, or do they want the .com (or .net or whatever) external,
visible domain name changed?

Clients often request the wrong thing. Sometimes they even request the right
thing but the 'consultant' interprets it wrong.

What needs changing and why?

certainly your choice, but if this is only for their external domain name
change, you're doing them a huge disservice by the re-install, not to
mention the extra cost
