Btw;
There are two linkies at the bottom of this page that may be of some
interest to peeps here:
polling: <www.gridter.com/survey.html>
results: <www.gridter.com/cgi-bin/survey/survey.cgi?survey_name=survey>
Wouldn't call the poll very well worded but, the results were pretty
interesting...

Hows come you don't ever post from Ubuntu?

What animal noises? From the computers, or from the boys? Please clarify.

I have got a company supplied laptop, which I am supposed not to alter, and
this one runs marvellously my private Linux stuff right from USB.
However I prefer to post out of outlook express, where can just dictate my
contributions without having to type them...

Only a few that I know of are really worth pursuing (as an
Install)...Ubuntu (and the various flavors of it), OpenSuSE, Mepis,
Fedora Core, Freespire, and Mandriva. Of course there are others but I
find these the best overall. I still need to try PCLinuxOS...that is my
project this weekend. Dream Linux as a Live distro rocks for media
playback, but as an install it reeks. No clear updated repositories.
JMHO / YMMV.

Be prepared to go WOW! I'm running the new v2007-test right now from an

I'm a deb devotee, but I make an exception when it comes to Texnix.

I just installed PCLinuxOS-07 on a spare partition. Like Mark Warner, I'm
pretty much a Deb-based devotee but, again like him, I'm saying, "Wow!"
Very little configuration... most everything works, so far. Easy wifi
config even for my difficult Broadcom card. A slim but adequate selection
of apps and additional repos are easily tacked on. I think this one is
going to be fun. Juzme

The more I read this sort of review, the more I think I should test it
out, if I can find partition space. By all accounts so far, Tex does a
bang-up job with this distro in making it "just work" - better even than
distros with a lot more manpower to put into the distro.

Ubuntu (K, X, El, etc) are great...the only real difference is the
desktop. As for tossing WIndows, I do not ever plan on not having a
windows box for emergencies.
Upgrading from one version to another in the (X,K,El, U)buntu variants
is usually painless...keepign all your settings (which are in your /home
folder and that is not usually touched during upgrades).
I tried the last version (not the test version) of PCLinux OS and it was
good, but the wireless (Which worked on Ubuntu and Mepis) would not.

If nothing else, give the Live CD a spin. The current test version is
TR-1, but TR-2 is due any time. From what I can gather, there is strong
emphasis being placed on wireless support, and they want that to be as
good as it can be before the new version goes final.
Personally, I have been unable to get wireless working with my
rtl8180-chip-based pcmcia card with the new TR-1 Live CD, but have high
hopes for TR-2. OTOH, the new SimplyMEPIS_32 Beta 4 Live CD *does*
connect after a little GUI configuring.
