Actually, as of today (I think) Maya has a free edition with almost
all of the abilities of the commerical edition. They have it on their
website at:

It is dubbed the Maya Personal Learning Edition. Slashdot also has an
article on it.

Maya LE (lerning edition) is NOT the best.. it is NOT for comercial use, the
renderer is watermarking through the renderes, and if you buy MAYA later,
the work done in LE will NOT open in MAYA.
