Comodo firewall blocks everything
Posted by davegb on September 23rd, 2006

Based on the reccommendations of some in this NG, I installed Comodo
firewall this week when I re-installed Win2000. I'm considering
replacing it with something else. I am having all kinds of problems
connecting to web sites and updating my virus software (Avast). Even
though Avast is in the list in Comodo several times, it keeps blocking
it from updating. I have to turn off Comodo entirely so Avast can
update. Firefox is in the list 3 times, which means, I believe, I've
told Comodo 3 times to allow Firefox access. And I''ve been clicking
the "remember" option each time. So Comodo can't remember it's been
told to let an app access a good part of the time.

Does anyone know if there are settings I should try changing that won't
comprimise the protection I'm getting but so that if I tell Comodo to
give an app access all the time, it does so? Otherwise, I'm open to
other ideas on freeware firewalls. I just want some protection but
still be able to access the net.

Thanks in advance.

I notice this behavior at times, too. The firewall seems to have a problem
with restoring access after it has initially blocked access while it waits
for the user to give permission. I also turn it off briefly to get things
moving and then turn it back on - it seems fine afterward. I also wondered
about the multiple entries for applications. If you select the entries and
chose "edit" you will see that they are not duplicates even though they have
the same application name. Hopefully Comodo will eliminate the glitchy
behavior soon.

I noticed it too. The latest release of Comodo fixed the problem for
me, but that was a while back. I've been using Ashampoo, and like it a
lot.

Comodo. I am not yet displeased with Comodo, though I also am getting
multiple repeat queries from it. I guess more is better than less in a
firewall. I mean, it's not like it's erring on the unsafe side...it's
being a bit more, er motherly. Is that bad?

It's not bad, and it's not redundant either. When I look in the Comodo
Firewall applications list at the multiple entries for Avant.exe (great
freeware browser, but I digress <g>) what is different about them is the
"parent" entry. In other words, there's an entry for starting the program
directly, and there are additional entries for when Avant.exe is called by
other programs, such as when I click a web link in Outlook Express.

The problem I have with CPF is that occasionally it will not give internet
access back to the application after you've clicked the "Allow" button on
the permissions pop-up. When that happens turning off the firewall for a
few seconds usually sorts it out (then turn it back on, of course <g>).

I noticed that too. Sometimes making a custom rule helps with that
problem.

Anyway, I really like Comodo. It's good to know I can fall back on it
if Ashampoo ever lets me down.

I had just installed a security pack that's included in the price of my
cable provider. BIG mistake. I couldn't access a thing. I moved slow, I
was being knocked offline continuously. I found Comodo on a search. I
installed it AFTER completely removing my other pack...and reinstalling
Norton for other things. The Comodo asked me questions once and I was
again able to access everything as before...and move faster. So far
it's doing the job for me :-)

To cut down the queries.
Comodo has > Scan for known applications ( it reduces the number of
popups after installing ) Refer below.

Also, if you want less popups & lower security, tick > Do not show any
alerts for the applications certified by Comodo.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll change my setting tonight when I get

some other posters!
