Disk Space Pro v1.4 -- show disk space usage
Posted by MitchellWmA on April 10th, 2007

WinXP has shown at home and at office that it doesn't display
removable disks with pie chart like it did in Win2K (or even Win98SE).
I checked the archives but didn't find anything that I liked since
they involved as many mouse clicks as WinXP to get to properties of
folder to see pie chart. So I googled. Found this app. It's small
(<100kb zipped, ~186kb unzipped) and is a standalone, both were
requirements for me, personally:

(untranslated page:

direct dl link:

Comes with an options area to set what you want to see.

Nice little program. I have serious doubts I will EVER use it, as it
is far more simpler for me to setup Yahoo Widgets to show me on
desktop whatever info I need.

This is a nice utility for overall disk space but I prefer
using the free version of TreeSize.

When it's time to clean up the hard drive, I run this
program. You can right click on any drive and/or folder
and all folders and subfolders are shown with the
amount of their disk space use.

For me, TreeSize is essential in finding out "exactly"
what folder is monopolizing all my disk space. I just
run it on the root of C and it breaks it all down. If
you need to find out info on network drives you will
have to purchase the "Pro" version.

I keep a copy of the free version on a flash drive -
comes in handy when I am trouble shooting a friend's PC.

My 2 cents.

Yes, I have TreeSize on my thumb drive, as well. I was just looking
for something that at a glance would tell me how much space I have
left on it. Since the ability via that pie chart feature has been
stupidly left out of WinXP and after getting fed up on twice a day
having to RICHT-CLICK > PROPERTIES after opening MY COMPUTER to
monitor how much space I have available on the thumb, I went looking
for this app and thought to share. I specifically looked for
something that was simple as this app is.

Yes, it is good and it's one fo the tools I use to see where I need to
cull the heaviest on the thumb. But, as you know, it doesn't just
show you quickly how much space you really have.

Ditto.

Ditto and I agree with it all. I should have explained that it's just
a tool to see sizes that one can use along with something like
TreeSize for a thumb drive.

I'm sure that when I can afford to get something bigger than my 256meg
drive, space won't be such an issue (famous last words?).

Don't know how I survied pre-thumb days! It's been nearly a year and
it's now so indispensible. And it cost me about $10 bucks after
rebate. Can't beat that *g*.

Well, and who said you had to??!!! *vbg* Seriously, I should have
explained that this simplicity was _exactly_ what I was looking for.
I'll try to remember to mention things like that in future. It fills
a targetted need and it makes it ideal for me. I use it in
conjunction with TreeSize.

p.s., serious-ness aside, after all, anything recommended here that
people don't like can also be ignored *g*. cheers

You don't have to - I just mentioned MY point of view.

Of course. But you could then open up your own blog and disable the
comments )))

If you don't already, please do make regular backups.
I had a 256MB thumb drive that somehow got wiped one time when I plugged
it in. Couldn't trust it after that, so I gave it to a friend of mine
who hasn't had any issues with it for over two years now.
But ever since then, I mirror the contents of my thumb drives on my PC
at home as well as the PC I use at work. Better safe than sorry :-)

I used TreeSize long ago but these days use WinDirStat
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/windirstat/ or http://windirstat.info/)

It's open source, no-install if you get the zipped download, relatively
small (636K), and dare I say pretty in its display.

Most importantly, you get an instant view of where your big files are,
regardless of how deeply buried they are in directories.

Thanks, that's something I got used to doing right off the bat. I
just make a copy of the whole thumb onto my desktop into dated
folders. When I had enough to fill one DVD, I burned it. I'm into
building up to my second DVD backup *g*. thankx
